Dan Proskauer: Vision and Leadership for Newton Schools!
What are the challenges in allocating Newton Public School resources equitably among schools?
Resources should be allocated to bring the best educational outcome to all students regardless of school.  Equitable does not have to mean “same."  Each school has unique qualities as well as unique challenges.  Some schools may need more of something than others and that is OK.  Newton Public School resources should be expected to adequately meet the needs of all students and all schools - including technology.  Supplementing basic materials should not be necessary

In your efforts to grapple with the current fiscal constraints, what programs would you cut, downsize, or consolidate?  Are there any programs into which you would put more resources?
Simply answering this question each year is what got us into the mess we are in.  We must establish a financial model and structure that supports the programs we value within reasonable revenue expectations.  Once we have some breathing room we can invest.  One investment example is improving early intervention at the integrated preschool which will reduce SPED costs in later years.  Another is virtual classrooms which will allow us to increase breadth of offerings.

What qualities and experience will you look for in a candidate for the school superintendent position?
Our next Superintendent must be an experienced change agent who has demonstrated success under financial challenge.  They need broad leadership skills; someone who can inspire teachers, students and the wider community.  Our Superintendent must be aligned with our vision for Newton Schools, and be accountable for achieving specific and measurable goals. It is up to us to have the vision and craft the goals that will take Newton Schools where we know they can be.
