Dan Proskauer: Vision and Leadership for Newton Schools!

Although I participate regulary on the Newton Parents listserve and blog, as well as the Newton Tab blog, I thought adding a blog to my web site would be another vehicle for communication about issues important to the upcoming school committee race.  If there are topics you would like to suggest for the blog, please comment to this post!  Otherwise, I will try to start a new topic every week or so as current events warrant.

Dan,
I am interested, what is your stance on a voluntary METCO programs in NPS? How does it contribute to Newton, Newton kids, Newton budget and us, the taxpayers?
Thank you,

I did specifically comment on Metco in this blog post: http://www.danforward4sc.org/1/post/2009/03/cag-reportdetails-22restoring-trust.html

Here is what I said:

For the record, I am a supporter of the METCO program. I attended NPS and experienced what our participation means from the student’s perspective. I believe that the social benefits outweigh the costs, but I too have many unanswered questions about the program, how it is financed, what it truly costs us and how we measure the results.

More on Metco... The questions that Gennady asks are both very good questions and also difficult to answer. Many of them touch on subjective valuation of how the program achieves (sometimes unstated) societal goals.

As this is an important aspect of our school system I have been in contact with members of the Metco staff and will be meeting with one of the Metco directors in the near future to dive into these and other issues in more detail. I will plan to post a much more detailed finding after I have that meeting.

So can you be more specific:
what exactly are those "social benefits" that you got? And are your kids in NPS receiving those social benefits (if any) using METCO? And, if no METCO, wouldn't they still be receiving those benefits, given today's Newton demographical make-up?
I don't think I agree with you.
I think it's a feel-good program, which doesn't benefit Newton kids whatsoever and just a waste of money and resources.
And it's a racist program, because it's race-based. Just fuels the race division. Complete contrary to MLK dream: "I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Shame on you, Dan.
